Spider Veins

Spider veins are small, thin clusters of red, purple and blue veins that lie very close to the surface of the skin. They affect millions of men and women and commonly appear on the thighs and lower legs. Spider veins should not be confused with varicose veins, which are much larger and are treated very differently.

Several treatment options are available today. Slightly larger spider veins are typically injected with a sclerosing solution, causing the vein to clot off and eventually disappear. There is usually some associated bruising. Smaller spider veins are treated very effectively using a laser. Most patients require more that one treatment for the larger areas, and a combination of injection and laser is very effective.

Both injection and laser treatment of spider veins is a relatively simple procedure that requires no anesthesia. It usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. There is very little disability, and most patients can resume their normal work immediately.
